The smart car is a mini-compact, two-seater that’s been around since the late 1990s, intended to offer economic and sustainable options for urban drivers. If you’re considering driving a smart car, you’re probably wondering what you stand to gain or lose by choosing this unusual vehicle.

Pros of driving a smart car

They use less fuel – in fact, the original smart car was designed to do around 40 mpg. Yet nowadays, there are many options that exceed this already impressive consumption rate, with their power augmented through solar power or electricity.
  • Electricity: The electric smart car’s capabilities exceed that of the fuel-powered version. And even compared to other electric vehicles, smart cars stand a cut above the rest, boasting impressively quick charging times. There’s a variety of charging options available and you can even charge it using a regular home power outlet.

Cons of driving a smart car

Like with any car, there are also several reasons a smart car might not be suitable for you, including:

  • Limited space: The smart car’s main strength is also its greatest weakness. Considering the small size of the vehicle, it can be difficult to fit inside. Even though it’s marketed as being suitable for two people, it’s only really comfortable for one. Similarly, finding space for luggage or shopping is another challenge.
  • Safety: Although smart cars come with all the standard safety precautions life airbags and advanced braking systems, they simply can’t compare to a larger vehicle in a crash test. Smaller vehicles will always be less safe on the road, despite having the most advanced safety tech available. That said, there are newer SUV models that are safer.
  • Maintenance: There are many common maintenance issues associated with owning a smart car. For instance, many smart car drivers find that the AC stops blowing cold air quickly. This is a frustrating issue, and you could find yourself frequently spending on professional car air conditioning re-gas services only to discover there’s a more fundamental issue like a refrigerant leak.
