UN Human Rights Award Is Open for Nominations – Deadline Info, How to Apply, and More

human

The UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights recognizes the outstanding achievements of people and organizations in human rights. The United Nations General Assembly established the prize back in 1966 and it was awarded for the first time in 1968. Since the first award, the prize has been given out at five-year intervals, except for in 1983. To date, sixty-four awards have been presented. Nine of those were presented posthumously.

The last UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights was awarded back in 2018, which means another prize will be handed out this year. This year’s prize is made even more special because the UN is commemorating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the landmark Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UN Human Rights Prize for 2023 is now open for nominations. So, let us take a look at the deadline information, how to apply, and more.

The Deadline

The deadline for nominations has now been extended, but there is not much time left to nominate. The deadline for submissions is 23:59 (EST) on 10 May 2023. So, if you are intending to submit a nomination, you still have time, but you should make your submission soon.

How to Apply

Applying for the UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights is easy. Simply, apply via the online nomination form on the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights website.

Fill out the online questionnaire and then submit it.

You have the option to save the details you enter and complete the other fields later.

Eligibility

According to the rules established by the General Assembly resolution in 1966, “nominations can be made by member states, specialized agencies, and non-governmental organizations.”

Check the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights website for more details on eligibility.

Selecting the Winners

A special committee of five members will select the winners of the UN Human Rights Award.

Those five members are:

  • President of the General Assembly.
  • President of the Economic and Social Council.
  • President of the Human Rights Council.
  • Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women.
  • Chair of the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee.

The Award Ceremony

If you make a nomination, you will have to wait a while to find out the results. The winners will be announced at an award ceremony in December 2023.

The event will take place at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The Prize

The prize itself is a stylish metal plaque in an artistic design that bears the UN seal.

Each one is engraved specifically for the award recipient.

Consider an Award Ceremony for Your Organization

If you run a company or organization and championing human rights contributors is important to you, consider holding your own award ceremony in which you hand out trophies or prizes to deserving employees.

You could even tie the event in with the UN Human Rights Award and hold your award ceremony on the same day.

It might take you a while to come up with ideas for different award titles, but it is quick and easy to find a variety of glass award shapes and various awards and prizes that are suitable for your ceremony when you shop online.

The Takeaway

Human rights are basic rights that we all should have, for the simple reason that we are all human.

Human rights embody values like fairness, equality, and respect. They are also a means by which to protect people, especially those who face neglect, abuse, and isolation.

By awarding the UN Human Rights Award, we can recognize those outstanding individuals and organizations who have gone the extra mile to help to ensure our human rights are protected.
