6 Things to Do Before You Take Your Honeymoon

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! Amidst all the planning, preparing for your honeymoon is probably at the top of your list. A honeymoon is the trip of a lifetime – a chance to relax and enjoy your new spouse’s company in an incredible setting. But before you can jet off into the sunset, there are a few things you need to take care of first.

Here are six things to do before you take your honeymoon:

Check your passport

If you’re planning international travel, ensure your passport is up to date and will not expire during your trip. Some countries require your passport to have at least six months of validity before its expiration date, so check travel restrictions before you go. If you need to renew your passport, do so well in advance of your departure date. It can also be a good idea to make copies of your passport and other essential travel documents in case you lose them while on your journey.

Alert your bank

Let your bank know that you’ll be traveling so they don’t flag your account for suspicious activity. Alerting your bank can help prevent your card from being declined when making purchases in a different state or country. If you’re traveling internationally, consider getting a travel credit card with no foreign transaction fees to save money while away.

Familiarize yourself with your destination

If you’re honeymooning abroad, read up on your destination’s customs and culture to avoid potential misunderstandings and take some time to learn a few key phrases in the local language. Also, be sure to research the climate so you pack appropriately.

Consider Insurance

While insurance may be the farthest thing from your mind when planning your romantic getaway, it can offer significant peace of mind. Consider travel insurance which provides coverage for medical emergencies or other unforeseen events. If you have life insurance, make sure you’ve updated your beneficiaries to include your spouse — and if you don’t have life insurance, make a plan to compare different policies and find one that meets your needs.  As a newlywed couple, you’ll begin your life together with the confidence of knowing you’re both protected.

Set a budget

Honeymoons can be expensive, so it’s wise to budget for your trip in advance. Decide how much you’re willing to spend on accommodations, activities, and food, and then start looking for ways to save money. Setting aside money each month can help reduce financial stress. You’ll worry less and stay in the moment more.

Plan your activities

Part of the fun of traveling is trying new things, and no one wants to waste precious vacation time debating what to do. Make a list of the things you and your spouse would like to experience on your honeymoon and put together an itinerary. It’s a good idea to book activities in advance. Popular attractions often sell out, and booking early might save you some cash.

By taking care of these six things before your honeymoon, you’ll be ready to relax and enjoy the adventure. Whether exploring a new city, lounging on the beach, or hiking through the mountains, this will be a trip to remember. Safe travels!
