General information about headphones
It’s hard to believe, but about 100 years ago headphones were even more common than they are today: for the simple reason that in the early days of radio sets you could only listen to the radio with headphones, there were no built-in speakers in the sets yet. Today, headphones seem to be taking over the world again – but for very practical reasons: people want to be able to enjoy music, watch videos or watch TV in private, undisturbed and without disturbing others. According to a survey, a good three quarters of all Germans own headphones, and more than 10 million headphones are sold in Germany every year.
Increasingly popular are wireless designs of in-ear headphones, also known in this country in modern parlance as “earbuds”. The two earbuds can be connected to each other by a neck cable or function completely wirelessly (“True Wireless”). Both variants together account for almost half of all headphones.
The classic cone headphones (“on-ear” headphones or “over-ear” headphones) are now also becoming increasingly popular in wireless versions. The choice of design is a very individual decision; some people find the in-ear variants rather unpleasant, while others only use over-ear headphones as a matter of principle, particularly for reasons of style, which are then often worn around the neck as a stylish accessory when not in use and taken practically everywhere. In electrical terms, impedance is the ratio of voltage to current across the voice coil built into the headphone. Most earphones worn in the ear and modern earphones today are low impedance models, with impedance ranging from 4 to 100 ohms. Medium-impedance earphones have an impedance of between 100 and 1,000 ohms, which means that they are only suitable to a very limited extent for battery- or accumulator-powered devices and are mostly used for stationary equipment. In general, you can assume that a higher impedance means a better sound because the resistance is higher. The sensitivity of a model is another important performance characteristic. Sensitivity is expressed in dB (decibels), which is a measure of the sound pressure produced by the headphones. However, the actual sound pressure produced by a listener can only be calculated on a case-by-case basis, depending on the output power of the device being played back and on the relationship between the impedance and sensitivity of the model in question. If two models have the same sensitivity, the higher impedance model will always be quieter – but this may not be the case if the two models have different sensitivities.
Active Noise-Reduction is a frequently requested special function for all models. The receiver has an external microphone that picks up and analyzes all ambient noise. A frequency is then played in exactly opposite directions so that the two frequencies cancel each other out. Neither the ambient noise nor the recorded frequency are audible afterwards. The advantage is that you can listen to music at a very low volume and ambient noise is basically not a problem. The technology, which is also used to some extent in cars to muffle the driving noise, cannot eliminate all ambient noise one hundred percent – but usually works very well in the particularly unpleasant and harmful low-frequency range.
Noise reduction is also possible with earpieces worn in the ear, which achieves excellent attenuation, especially in the low-frequency range. In order to suppress higher frequency noise (from around 500 Hz), however, it is better to use over-ear versions, which generally achieve better attenuation values in this range with a closed design than is possible with models worn in the ear.
To achieve a better listening experience and to perceive sounds “three-dimensionally”, the brain needs directional information. This is basically not possible when sound is emitted directly at the ear, since there is only one sound source directly in front of the ear. This disadvantage can be compensated for technically in various ways: on the one hand, the headphone drivers can be installed at a slight angle in certain designs, which leads to a more three-dimensional sound experience. However, truly three-dimensional hearing is only possible with complex electronic manipulations of the sound that add signal components with sound direction information necessary for the brain. This works particularly well with technologies such as Dolby Surround Sound. In addition, a so-called diffuse field equalization, which provides for an even better spatial sound perception by adding artificially generated front-rear signal components (additional sound source in front of the listener and behind the listener), can be used.
Special bass amplifiers are already standard on many models today, but usually bass amplification is generated by reshaping the sounds at the sound-emitting device. Good quality headphone models can cover a frequency range between 20 Hz and 20 kHz (i.e. almost the entire human hearing range of younger people), so audible bass can be reproduced without any problems. Are headphones harmful?
Whether and to what extent wearing earphones is harmful cannot be conclusively determined scientifically. Technically, all devices are capable of producing very high sound levels of over 120 dB directly at the eardrum, which are considered potentially harmful.
