What is CBD Oil? How can you use it?

CBD oil is a form of cannabidiol that’s extracted from the cannabis plants and mixed with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or hemp seed oil.

CBD, also known as “cannabinoids”, is one of many chemicals found in cannabis plants. It appears to bind to brain receptors to produce certain effects. This one doesn’t contain the most well-known cannabinoid (THC), the compound that causes people to feel “high” after smoking marijuana.

While CBD oil doesn’t produce a high, it has been shown to reduce the symptoms of many ailments, such as chronic pain, anxiety, and depression.

It shouldn’t be smoked. It is, however, edible and can be used in food. It can also be applied topically to the skin. It is best to take the CBD oil in its pure form. Simply place the desired amount under your tongue with the dropper and hold it there for at least 60 seconds. This will allow the blood vessels to absorb the CBD oil. After 60 seconds, the CBD oil is ready to be swallowed.

anti-inflammatory properties. Research has demonstrated promise that CBD can reduce insulin resistance and moderate blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes who are not on insulin.

Emily Kyle

We asked leaders in diabetes education for more information about CBD oil and diabetes. We were immediately referred Emily Kyle to Holistic Cannabis Practitioner and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). She is based in upstate New York. Kyle is not a diabetes expert, but he has been referred to by healthcare professionals as an expert in the overall effects of cannabis on health.

We asked her five questions about CBD oil and diabetes.

DM) Do you have any concerns when using it?

EK) CBD oil can be used in the same way as any over-the-counter medication or supplement. CBD oil is not recommended for people with type 1 or 2 diabetes. There are many concerns, from the quality and type of the product to the possible side effects.

For diabetics who take insulin or prescription medication, the biggest concern is the possible interaction between cannabinoid and drug. Researchers believe it is possible that insulin sensitivity may be buffered by the endocannabinoid systems rather than being inhibited.

The lack of clinical evidence is not sufficient to give guidelines on the safety and effectiveness of CBD. CBD is only one of many cannabinoids. It is not clear if other cannabinoids like CBN and THC, which may be present in CBD oil products, could have an impact on people with diabetes.

Are there any effects on blood sugar?

Unfortunately, there are no clinical studies on CBD oil’s direct effects on blood sugar in humans. This is likely because marijuana is illegal and is considered a Schedule 1 drug by the Federal Government.

We know that the body’s Endocannabinoid System plays an important role in energy metabolism regulation, which is vital information for people with diabetes. Emerging data indicates that “the Endocannabinoid System sets the sensitivity insulin response in adipocytes”. This means that the body’s endocannabinoid systems plays an important part in insulin sensitivity, increasing or decreasing it. This is critical for insulin users because it can cause blood sugar levels to rise or fall in unexpected ways, making tight control difficult.

My experience has shown me that CBD oil can have completely different reactions from clients. One client said that CBD oil dramatically reduced their blood sugar in a matter of minutes. This could be very dangerous. Others report no change in blood sugar. This can be attributed to the individuality of each client’s endocannabinoid system as well as their individual endocannabinoid tone.

Is CBD oil the best choice for diabetes patients?

If you have diabetes, the best CBD oil is one that has been manufactured by a trusted company and has been tested by a third party lab to verify that it is true and accurate. CBD oil is still unregulated and many CBD oil products have been found to be misleading consumers.

Additional ingredients, artificial flavors, artificial dyes, artificial colors, added sugars and other ingredients like melatonin are all things I recommend people avoid.

Do you have any recommendations for CBD gummies that contain sugar?

It doesn’t matter if you have diabetes, but it is counterintuitive to use CBD with refined sugar, artificial colors, and artificial flavors.

Instead, I encourage people make their own CBD gummies using whole-food ingredients like fruit and vegetable purees as well as quality CBD oil concentrate or extract. is a simple tutorial that shows you how to make homemade CBD gummies using only natural fruit and vegetable purées with no added sugar.

You can get cannabis counseling from a Holistic Cannabis Practitioner if you’re unsure how to start using CBD oil for diabetes. ( It’s true!

CBD Oil for Type 1 Diabetes

We also spoke with Rob Howe, a Texas-based former pro basketball player-turned-diabetes-advocate who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a teenager in 2006. He is the founder of a non-profit called Diabetics Doing things. As a teenager, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

We also asked him five questions about the topic.

DM) How do I use CBD oil personally?

RH) Yes, I do both. However, my primary method is oral capsules. I either take one 30mg capsule every morning, or I add 30mg of the tincture (liquid), to my morning coffee. It can also be used topically, but mainly on my sore joints. CBD taken orally gives me a greater overall effect.

What effects does this have on your body?

Good question! You’re right! CBD helps me feel more balanced. This means I wake up earlier, can get warm up for exercise/sports/fitness quicker, and get ready for bed faster. My soreness after exercise is lessened, my time in deep sleep on the sleep tracker is longer, and I feel happier as a result.

Are you seeing any changes in your diabetes?

My experience with CBD, whether it’s available over-the-counter or online, has not shown any significant impact on my blood sugar levels. This is just my personal experience. But, I believe that the ability to exercise more without pain and sleep better has an indirect effect on my diabetes.

Is your diabetes educator or endocrinologist unsure about your use of CBD oil and what your options are?

Because I am a highly-optimized person, my endo kind of looks at me. CBD is one of the newest and most popular health trends. Of course, she asked me to be mindful of when I began taking CBD. She was pleased to hear about my positive results regarding holistic health and wellbeing, even though my diabetes was not directly affected.

What is your recommendation for the best CBD oil to use in treating diabetes?

I use GreenHelix CBN oil, specifically the GreenHelix Recovery as well as the GreenHelix Super Purified products. These products help me with my joint pain and also ease some of the symptoms of social anxiety and depression. I’m interested in a CBD oil-based sleeping product and a skin cream.
