“Concentration is the essence of all knowledge; nothing can be done without it.” These inspiring words of wisdom from Swami Vivekananda, who himself was a living embodiment of the power of concentration, hold relevance in every student’s life. Schools today are equipped with modern amenities such as smart classes, a learning management system, ERP software, and likewise which provide a great learning environment for the students. However, student concentration is key for effective learning. We all have friends who actually dedicate little time to their studies, but always seem to outperform most students in the class. We all accuse them of lying when they tell us that they studied no more than anyone else, yet we know somewhere that they are telling the truth, for their mental acuity quite often, is also apparent in their conversations and observant nature.
Intelligence is something that has a genetic component. Concentration, on the other hand, can be developed with practice and by taking an active interest in learning. Luckily for us, more often than not, the difference between the students who get better grades and others can be pinned down to differences in concentration. Enhancing your level of concentration can not only improve your academic performance but can also make you a more self-aware, confident, and successful individual in all walks of life. Here are a few important factors that influence a student’s concentration in the classroom….
Being in the Present-
We all have experienced that when we really enjoy what we are learning, our comprehension and clarity of the topic automatically shoots up. The key reason why this happens is that when we are interested in learning something, we are highly focused on the instructions of the teacher, almost to the exclusion of everything else. The most important factor responsible for achieving a high level of concentration is being in the here and now. The secret of concentration is to be hundred percent at the moment. While you are in the class, your focus shouldn’t be on what you learned yesterday, or what all things you can do after the class. Ideally, you should not even be stressed about not forgetting things that you learned just five minutes ago unless they are relevant to your understanding of what is being taught now. You can always look up the things you couldn’t retain in-class notes or recorded lectures. Your only focus should be on what the teacher is explaining at this moment in time.
We live in the age of distractions. A single text from someone can easily eat up a lot of our time if you let it. It is wise to keep potential external distractions at a minimum by turning off notifications of such apps on your cell phone or organizing your study table keeping the external distractors at bay.
Meditation can have a significant impact on your level of concentration as well as help you in achieving clarity and peace of mind. The basic idea is to imagine yourself as an observer of your own mind, by separating yourself from your thoughts, turning the mind back upon itself, so to say. Thereupon, you start by seeing your thoughts as the ripples emanating from a point of disturbance on a water body, and gradually with practice, you try to channelize and minimize those ripples. This practice can be deeply calming and improve your ability to focus and feel the ground under your feet. It can also reduce your stress and anxiety related to academics, which are known factors that have a significantly negative impact on a student’s level of concentration.
Eating and Sleeping Habits-
We are what we eat. Eating healthy food not only improves our physical health, but it also enhances our mood and keeps us physically and mentally agile. Similarly, getting adequate sleep is also a critical factor that dictates our ability to focus. Not getting at least, 6 to 8 hours of sleep on a regular basis can seriously limit our ability to concentrate and also leave us irritable and unproductive, all day long.
Concentration is the key to all success in life. The difference between human beings and other animals is our heightened self-awareness and the ability to concentrate. Even the difference between human beings may also be attributed to their level of concentration. Following the tips mentioned in this article is a surefire way for the students to improve their level of concentration and enhance their academic performance.
